Beyond the Surface: Exploring Lissy's Insightful Approach to Relationship Counselling
My intrigue with the complexity of human minds began when I was just 15 years old. My mum was a family lawyer and that's when I heard about court cases, the struggles of separating spouses, and also the impact on their families.
This curiosity led me to study psychology (with Honours) in Australia, igniting a journey that took me across the globe to London. Here, I was fortunate to be one of a select few invited to pursue a Master's in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for Couples at the world-renowned Tavistock Relationships.
After a fruitful four-year training period, I was honoured to remain at Tavistock Relationships as a couples therapist, and also as a tutor and lecturer training relationship counselling. Eventually, I returned to Sydney and founded the Heath Group Practice. Today, I manage this clinic whilst also offering therapeutic and specialist services to clients worldwide.
Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of serving in various esteemed positions in the UK - Tavistock Relationships Association of Psychotherapists and Counsellors, and in Australia as Vice-President of the Couple, Child, and Family Psychotherapy Association of Australasia. I also work with skilled healthcare professionals as a member of MamaMia’s mental health expert panel.
My commitment to providing couple or marriage counselling has driven me to publish academic work, and also develop successful online couple programs like 'Fight Less, Love More' helping them overcome relationship issues like cycles of conflict, diminishing intimacy and to help them create harmony at home with effective communication skills. My book, 'Relationship Reset', using my vast experience in couples counselling, delves into the complex world and life of couples and marriage, providing insights and tools for making partnerships and marriages more respectful and loving.
I believe we all have the capacity to improve our relationships and lives with the right knowledge and practical strategies. This is why I've made it my mission to ensure help is available to everyone, not just those who can attend counselling sessions with me one-on-one, but to anyone determined to navigate the awkward and complex world of couples and marriage, to make their relationships thrive.
So whether you're here to enter my online programs, read my blogs, or just learn a bit more about couples therapy, welcome. I'm glad you're here.

This often reveals surprising insights that can significantly shift the dynamics between you and your partner. This essential tool in my couples counselling sessions, leads to improved emotional connection and increased empathy, two key factors in couples therapy.
My program Fight Less, Love More is heavily focused on relationship conflict and resolution strategies. After all, it's not about avoiding relationship conflict, but learning how to navigate it in a way that strengthens your bond rather than damaging it. My couples counselling techniques will guide you on how to turn heated arguments into productive discussions.
My couples therapy program Transforming Couple Communication (aka It's time to pull up your socks!) examines your couple's communication and where you can do better to increase respect and harmony at home.

Unexpected Fatherhood
One of the most profound shifts partners can experience is the transition into parenthood, especially when it comes as a surprise. That's why I've decided to delve into the topic of unexpected fatherhood in my "Accidental Fatherhood" podcast.
Unexpected fatherhood can bring a whirlwind of emotions, changes, and challenges in a man's life. It can put significant strain and stress on a relationship and between partners, but it can also provide an opportunity for deep growth and bonding.Join us as we explore the emotional, relational, and even financial implications of unexpected fatherhood, and how to navigate these changes effectively.
Many healthcare professionals have been trained to utilise different models of therapy. Using evidence based psychotherapy helps professional relationship counsellors, to thoroughly understand the behavioural patterns of different marriage or relationship issues.
Learn More About Unexpected FatherhoodFinancial Infidelity
In my years as a relationship therapist, I've seen how 'financial infidelity' can wreak havoc on the trust and bond between partners. Much like a physical affair, financial infidelity involves hiding financial actions or disclosure from one's partner. This term might be new to some of you, but it's a common issue I encounter in my marriage counselling sessions, especially in these challenging financial times.
Financial infidelity can take many forms, from not informing your partner about certain purchases to misleading them about your income or debt levels. People often commit financial infidelity due to feelings of shame, humiliation, fear, and anxiety over their financial situation. These emotions can stem from past experiences and deeply ingrained beliefs about money, leading them to hide the truth, even from those closest to them.
The current interest rate hikes has been putting further financial strain on us Australians, and this fuels experiences like financial infidelity occuring. When partners are caught it can cause great damage to marriages, with some partners even becoming so fed up over time, they end the marriage.
In my consulting room, I've seen the stress it causes and other direct impacts of such financial 'cheating' on the functioning of a relationship. But there is hope.

In my couples counselling work through the years, one of the recurring themes that frequently arises is conflict, an inevitable aspect of any relationship. That's why I've decided to dedicate a series of blog posts to exploring "The Toll Of Conflict and Its Impact On Our Mental And Physical Health".
Conflict in a relationship is not inherently negative. In fact, when handled well, it can lead to growth, understanding, and a stronger bond. However, persistent, unresolved relationship conflict can have a significant toll on us physically and mentally, and most especially in our relationships.
In this series, I aim to shed light on the ways that ongoing conflict can impact us, from increased stress and anxiety to physical and mental health issues. We'll delve into the science behind these effects and explore practical strategies for managing and resolving conflict in a healthier way.
My hope is that through these posts, you and your partner can gain a better understanding of the importance of conflict resolution and its role in maintaining not just a healthy relationship, but also your individual ability to have good health.
Have you heard of the fight or flight response? Without knowing it, many couples use their primitive survival response (the one you would use if a lion was chasing you) with their partner. Follow me through this series of blog posts, and understand how to prevent stress caused by conflict from creating a negative impact on your partnership (or even destroying it), and learn how to create a deeper connection and more empathy in your marriage.

Learn More Ways To Understand Your FamilyCo-parenting successfully following a separation
As we all know, some marriages don't last. And when this happens, once-loving couples turn to separation to avoid further conflicts and to stop hurting each other more. Embarking on a journey through the tumultuous terrain of separation after a blissful marriage, this article illuminates the vital importance of successful and harmonious co-parenting for relationship satisfaction and the well being of the children.
Many separated parents fear that their child may be damaged as their family unit is disentangled (for some it disintegrates) and an uncertain future ahead of them. But with a focus on co-parenting, this fear can be mitigated - allowing your child to thrive in this new environment.
Learn about the freedom and mental health benefits that an effective co-parenting relationship can provide for your child, allowing them to dream and flourish, even in times of change. This piece is a must-read for any parent navigating separation, offering the keys to preserving the child's world amidst adult turmoil.
Do You Want To Learn More About Parenting? What’s ‘quiet quitting’ in relationships about?
As a couples counselling therapist, I've worked closely with many individuals struggling with a subtle, often unaddressed issue in their relationships - 'quiet quitting'.
In my latest article, I delve into the complex dynamics of this state of resignation, shedding light on how one partner might cease their efforts to improve the relationship, often they're not ready to entirely let go of their home setup. I share signs to look out for, such as a partner emotionally distancing themselves, or a partner's reluctance to discuss future plans. I also discuss the conscious and unconscious reasons behind this behaviour.
I explore why some individuals remain in this in-between state, hesitant to untangle the emotional, social, and financial bonds that connect them to their partner. From the fear of losing extended family connections to the comfort of familiar companionship, there are various factors that can anchor someone in this limbo.
This piece is a crucial read for anyone seeking to understand their partner's actions or their own feelings of ambivalence within their relationship. I hope to provide guidance and support through these intricate emotions.
Learn More About ConnectionTriggers – Blind Spots That Become Landmines
In my blog post, 'Triggers – Blind Spots That Become Landmines,' I address a significant blind spots we all have- triggers. Triggers are behaviours or stimuli that provoke memories of past traumatic experiences, making us relive those emotions in the present.
These are often rooted in our childhood experiences with caregivers, embedding fear into our minds and bodies. When triggered, we react based on this fear, leading to fight or flight responses. However, those around us, like our partner, weren't present during our childhood, so they typically won't understand our reactions when triggered. To avoid unnecessary distress, we must identify and understand our own triggers, ultimately improving our emotional well being and relationship.
Learn More About Blind Spots In Your RelationshipWhere Do Our Expectations And Beliefs About Relationships Come From?
Have you ever wondered why you and your partner both perceive and react to things so differently? Or why certain expectations and beliefs concerning relationships are so deeply ingrained within you? Today, we're going to take a journey to the roots of these questions.
Each of us carries with us a unique relational template, formed by thousands and thousands of tiny interactions (called micro-moments) with our parents and caregivers during our early years. This template, encoded with decades-old experiences and behaviours, shapes our outlook on relationships, our expectations - and even our responses to our future partner's actions!
The question is: What happens when we experience clashes between our different templates? When they diverge to the point that we feel shocked or blindsided by our partner's perspective? Is there such a thing as a 'right' or 'wrong' template? Or are they just different?
Join me today as we explore these crucial aspects of relationships. Let's take a closer look at what is hidden in our unconscious reactions and learn how to navigate the inevitable differences in our relational templates more healthily. It's not always an easy path, but the journey towards understanding and peace is worth it.
